Real estate captivated John’s interest at an early age when, at age 10, he started helping his father build homes. Little did he know that the journey had just begun.

Upon graduating high school, he served four years in the United States Air Force followed by a four-year period simultaneously working two jobs – one with the Kroger Company and the other building homes. At age 25 he started selling real estate and attending college. Upon receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration and Management from La Roche College in 1981, John relocated to the Washington D.C. area where he ultimately became a trusted leader in commercial real estate management.

At age 25 he started selling real estate and attending college. Upon receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration and Management from La Roche College in 1981, John relocated to the Washington D.C. area where he ultimately became a trusted leader in commercial real estate management.

John thrived in the burgeoning Washington, D.C. market, initially working with a large local real estate developer/owner in residential management. After four years and rapid advancement, John expanded his real estate expertise as he accepted a leadership position with another local real estate developer/owner, overseeing the management, leasing, and marketing of a residential, office and retail portfolio.

In July 1991, recognizing the unique blend of skills he could offer owners of commercial real estate buildings, John, and his longtime associate Judith Brown, formed The Lann Companies. The Lann Companies has earned the respect and admiration of colleagues in its seamless and profitable integration of investment analysis, asset management, leasing, marketing, property management and construction management. Integral to this success is the building of long-term relationships with owners, developers, engineers, architects, construction managers, service providers, and tenants. Currently, The Lann Companies oversees a portfolio of five buildings with a value exceeding $40M.

Capitalizing on The Lann Companies’ comprehensive expertise, long-standing relationships, and established reputation, John is also overseeing the development of an 11-acre mixed use development site in Fairfax Virginia.

The complex nature of this project involves the (1) initial interaction with local jurisdictions in identifying the possibility of development, (2) chairing a Business Improvement District (BID) charged with the funding of a Master Plan for the three mile stretch of highway in the improvement district to include the Lann Companies site. (John chaired the BID for three years coordinating efforts between land owners, business owners, city officials and city staff in planning and public work departments), (3) assemblage over a 15 year period of 16 parcels of land purchased from 11 different owners, (4) obtaining a temporary use permit from the local jurisdiction to allow a steady income to partners, (5) overseeing improvements to the site, (6) leasing and management of the site, (7) overseeing the condemnation proceedings of a portion of the site to be used by the local jurisdiction and the Department of Transportation for road improvements and storm water management, including negotiating a fair compensation for the land, (8) assembling a team of builders, engineers and consultants to develop the site, and (9) overseeing the interaction of the team with local jurisdiction to obtain necessary approvals.

The success of The Lann Companies is due, in large part, to John’s business philosophy that true success comes when everyone is given a voice – when respect and fairness are cornerstones of every transaction, and when negotiations create “win/win” outcomes. The Lann Companies prides itself on never losing a client, creating wealth for its clients and fostering a relaxed and friendly workplace that embraces hard work and personal fulfillment.
